The Vikings made iolite's pleochlorism a virtue by using thin slices of the stone as a light polarizer to navigate their trips. By observing the sky through iolites, the Viking navigators were able to locate the exact position of the sun on overcast days. 2mm Faceted grayish, violet iolite beads are individually knotted green or red string and finished with a sturdy sterling silver clasp, measuring about 18-19 inches in length.
